While I was in Las Vegas last week covering the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show, I had the pleasure of being on a panel at Jeff Pulver’s Social Media Jungle.

The panel was put together by Daniel Honigman, the social media strategist at Tribune Interactive and keeper of the popular Colonel Tribune Twitter account. Daniel also writes a blog called Old Media New Tricks with Robert Quigley of the Austin American Statesman. Also on the panel was Kevin Sablan, the leader of the Orange County Register’s web taskforce.

Aside from the ridiculously long name of our panel (110 characters, you know better Dan! , this was a fun discussion. We touched on the usual topics of page views vs. quality journalism, using social media to connect with readers, support from the higher ups and of course, curmudgeons vs. new school.

Unlike previous panels I’ve spoke on, the majority of the people in the audience were not journalists, so it was fun to hear what people outside of the business wanted to know about how we do our jobs and how that is changing.

Below is video of our panel. It cuts off a few minutes early because my Flip Mino HD ran out of space. I know Daniel recorded it too, so maybe his video has the last few minutes.

The guy standing with his back turned to the camera at the beginning talking about Sam Zell is Jeff Pulver. Enjoy!

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending and leading a session at this year’s BlogOrlando unconference at Rollins College.

My talk focused on the ways I and other reporters use micro-blogging service Twitter to find sources and story ideas, stay up to date with the communities we cover and promote our work.

(I also spoke on a panel on “networked journalism” at the Society of Professional Journalists convention in Atlanta, here’s a recap. )

If you weren’t able to attend the talk, or want a recap, I’m posting all of the related materials here.

Since my post is a little late, there have already been some great recaps of the event.

For instance, Sarah Perez (who led one of my favorite BlogOrlando sessions), recaps the sessions she attended. You can also get a good feel for my session by reading her liveblog of it on FriendFeed.

There’s also a FriendFeed room where you can find lots of tweets, photos and other tidbits about BlogOrlando. Videos of several sessions can be found on Ustream and event organizer Josh Hallett, has a nice overall recap on the BlogOrlando site.

I only had a few slides during my presentation, but I’ve posted them here. In my presentation, I mentioned a bunch of articles, links, tweets and other information, all of which and more is collected on delicious here. The delicious bookmarks are divided into three groups: articles, examples, and bookmarks.

Also, with the help of Nanci Schwartz, I videotaped my session, which you can watch below. It’s not the greatest quality, and the camera stays trained on me, but you can hear everything fine. About 16 minutes into the video, a somewhat heated discussion ensues when someone in the audience questions the importance of newspaper exclusives in a new media world. Enjoy!

Thanks to everyone who attended my session and thanks to Josh Hallett and the other speakers and attendees for a great event. I hope we can do it again next year.
